How to Easily Edit Your Reading List on Mac

Your Safari Reading List is a great way to save articles for later when you don’t have time to read them. In this guide, I will show you how to manage your Safari reading list on a Mac. It’s pretty straightforward, so let’s get into it!

What Is a Reading List on a Mac?

First, though, what is a Reading List on a Mac?

Safari’s Reading List feature allows you to save articles to read later. Once you read them, you can mark them as read.

This is what differentiates the Reading List from bookmarks. Bookmarks are for webpages that you visit often. The Reading List, on the other hand, is for articles you want to read once in the future but don’t have the time to read just yet.

You can even download articles from your reading list to read them offline later, when you aren’t connected to the internet.

How to Add Pages to Your Reading List on Mac

Let’s start with how to add pages to your reading list on a Mac. When reading an article in Safari, click on the share icon in the top-right corner. Then, in the pop-up that appears, click on Add to Reading List to save the webpage to your Safari Reading List for later viewing.

How to Open the Reading List in Safari on Mac

To open your Reading List on your Mac, open the Safari app. Then, click on this icon in the top-left of the toolbar:  the Sidebar button

Next, click on Reading List to open the Reading List.

You can search for a specific article in your Reading List by entering text in the search bar above the list of summaries.

How to Edit Items in Your Reading List on Mac

Now, let’s talk about how to edit your Safari Reading List. Here are some cool things you can do:

  • To hide articles you have already marked as read, click on the Unread button.
  • To mark articles as read, right–click on an article and select Mark as Read.
  • To mark an article as unread, right-click on the article and select Mark as Unread.
  • To download an article for offline access, right-click on it and select Save Offline.
  • To read the next article in your reading list, just keep scrolling after finishing the previous article. The next one will appear automatically.

If you want all articles in your Reading List to be automatically downloaded for offline use, go to Safari > Settings > Advanced and select “Save articles for offline reading automatically.”

How to Remove Items From Reading List on Mac

To delete an article from your Safari Reading List, right-click on it and select Delete. If you have a trackpad or a mouse that supports gestures, you can also swipe left on the article and select Remove, or just swipe it all the way to the left until it disappears.

Removing Reading List items on your Mac deletes them from your list. If you might want to read an article again later, you can mark it as Read instead. That way, you can differentiate it from unread articles but not lose it.

How to Reorder and Organize Your Reading List Better

While you can’t reorder your Reading List on Safari, you can delete an article and then re-add it if you want it to appear at the top of the list again.

You can organize your Reading List a bit by marking articles as Read. That way, you can filter for unread articles. Another option is removing articles from your Reading List and adding them to your Bookmarks instead, as the Bookmarks feature offers more options for better organization.

The Reading List, on the other hand, offers limited organization features, as it’s designed simply to allow you to read articles later.

How to Sync Your Reading List Across Apple Devices

Your Safari Reading List will sync automatically across all of your Apple devices, as long as iCloud sync is turned on for Safari and you are signed into the same iCloud account on all devices.

To set up Safari to sync via iCloud, go to Apple menu  > System Settings > [Your Name] (click on Sign In if you don’t see your name) > iCloud > Saved to iCloud > See All and turn on Safari.

On macOS 13.3 to 14, go to Apple menu  > System Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Apps Using iCloud > Show All/Show More Apps and turn on Safari. On macOS 13 to 13.2, just go to Apple menu  > System Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud and turn on Safari.

What to Do if Your Reading List Is Not Working on Mac

If your Reading List is not syncing, your Mac might have a poor internet connection, or you may not have set up iCloud for Safari (you can do that by following the instructions in the previous section). The other device may also have a poor internet connection or not be signed into iCloud with the same account.

Conclusion

I hope these Safari Reading Lits tips were helpful! You can easily manage your Reading List by adding new articles, marking articles as read, saving them offline, and deleting them. It’s a great feature that allows you to save articles for later when you have no time to read them!
