How to Pay for Your Netflix Account

Do you want to pay for your Netflix account, and you don’t have a credit card? Whether you’re a new or existing subscriber, it might be useful to know that Netflix supports a variety of payment methods. In this guide, I will show you how to update your payment method on Netflix for easy Netflix billing. Let’s get into it!

Quick Facts (Before You Start)

First, it’s important to note that payment method availability is country-dependent. In some countries, Netflix supports additional payment methods that are only available in that country.

In this guide, I will be focusing on payment methods supported in the United States. If you are in another country, I will show you how to find out which methods are supported in your country.

Another thing worth noting is that Netflix supports monthly billing only. Unlike other popular subscriptions, Netflix does not offer discounts for yearly plans, nor does it support annual billing.

However, partner billing may be available, in which case you may be able to get a discount on Netflix as part of a phone or TV package.

Add or Update a Payment Method

To add or update a payment method, you will need to be logged into Netflix on a web browser, either on desktop or mobile.

  1. Start by visiting Netflix.com/account. If you are not yet logged in, log in to your account.
  2. Click on “Manage payment method,” which is located in the “Quick Links” section.
  3. To update your card, such as to enter a new CVV, click on “Update” under a listed payment method.
  4. To change your payment method, click on “Change Payment Method” and select the kind of payment method you want to add.
  5. Enter the payment method details. For example, if you chose “Credit or Debit Card,” enter your card details.
  6. Click on Save.

Supported Ways to Pay (Varies by Country)

Netflix supports credit, debit, prepaid, and some virtual cards from all four major payment processors: Visa, American Express, Mastercard, and Discover.

Here are the supported ways to pay in the United States:

  • Credit or debit card: This method is available in most countries, including the United States. The following types of cards are supported in the US: Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express.
  • Prepaid cards: Similar to debit cards, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express prepaid cards are supported. You can usually buy these prepaid cards online or at stores like CVS and pay for them with cash.
  • Virtual cards: Some virtual credit and debit cards are supported. Virtual cards are cards issued by your bank or financial provider but which only have a digital version and no physical version. Sometimes, they are used so you can avoid giving out your real card number when paying for things online. However, not all virtual cards will work on Netflix.
  • Netflix gift cards: Netflix gift cards can be used to pay for your account. You can purchase them yourself or be gifted them.
  • PayPal: PayPal is available in the United States, but not in all countries.
  • Partner payments: Some telecommunications carriers and providers allow you to add Netflix to your bill or offer television packages that include Netflix.

The following providers are partnered with Netflix and either allow you to add it to your bill or offer a package that includes Netflix:

  • Cox
  • Comcast Xfinity
  • DirecTV
  • Dish
  • Frontier
  • Optimum
  • T-Mobile
  • Verizon

If you are in another country, go to this page and select your country from the drop-down list to see supported payment methods.

Pay Without a Credit Card

Pay Without a Credit Card

If you don’t have a credit or debit card, don’t worry! There are several options available.

If you have PayPal, you can pay with PayPal.

But if you don’t have PayPal, you can buy a prepaid card at CVS, 7-11, Walmart, Target, or other convenience stores that sell prepaid cards. Just give them cash and get the card!

As long as it’s a Visa, Discover, Mastercard, or American Express prepaid card, it should work on Netflix. You can purchase additional cards later, or you may be able to return to the store and top up your card with more cash, if the card supports reloading.

You can also purchase a Netflix gift card. You can buy them online on Amazon or Best Buy. If you don’t have any debit or credit card, just go to Target or Walmart and buy them in person, using cash.

Netflix gift cards are similar to prepaid cards, but they can only be used for Netflix. If you want a prepaid card that can be used for other purposes, make sure to buy a general prepaid card and not a Netflix gift card.

In other countries, other options may be available. For example, in India, Netflix supports UPI AutoPay. That allows you to sign up using UPI AutoPay with a connected bank account. In some countries, Netflix supports mobile wallets.

Check Prices or Change Plan

To see your current plan and pricing, or to change your plan, follow these steps:

  1. Visit netflix.com/account in your browser. Log in if you are not yet signed in.
  2. Click on “Change plan” under “Quick links” to see your current plan.
  3. If you want to change your plan, select a different plan and click on Continue. Then, follow on-screen instructions to confirm.

If a Payment Fails

If a payment fails, Netflix will re-try your payment method several times. However, if it keeps failing, then you will not be able to continue watching once your current billing cycle is over.

If your payment method fails, check to make sure you have enough money in the account or on the card. If you do have enough money, make sure your account is not on hold or frozen. If you are using a card, make sure it is not expired.

You may also need to enable international billing on your card. Call your bank or financial institution to do so. Try a different payment method if you still can’t get yours to work.

Using Apple/iTunes Billing (Legacy)

If you are a legacy user, you may be paying for Netflix via Apple/iTunes billing. However, this is not a supported method for new users.

Some legacy accounts may be prompted to switch to standard billing, but that depends on your country. You may still be able to continue using Apple or iTunes billing to pay for Netflix if you set it up before support for it ended, depending on your country.

If you are paying for Netflix with iTunes, you can add a new payment method (such as a different card) to your Apple account by following the instructions here. You can cancel your Netflix membership by following the instructions here, if you don’t have the option to cancel from your Netflix account settings.

Note that Netflix gift cards do not work if you are paying with Apple. Instead, you will need to cancel your billing with Apple before redeeming your gift card on Netflix itself.

Conclusion

Remember, supported payment methods vary by country. While you can usually use a debit or credit card, reference the specific country page to see other supported methods, such as PayPal, partner payments, or mobile wallets. Pricing also varies depending on your country.
