How To Find Browsing History On Your iPad

In this guide, I will show you how to find your browsing history on your iPad. Whether you want to check your child’s iPad web activity, find a page that you visited but can’t find again, or delete your browsing history for privacy reasons, this guide is for you.

How to View Safari Browsing History on an iPad

To find your Safari browsing history, including your recently visited websites, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Safari app and tap on the Show Sidebar button, which looks like this: the Show Sidebar button
  2. Click on History (tap on the left-facing arrow if you don’t see the History option).
  3. There, you will see your browsing history.

To learn how to clear your history from this tab, read on.

How to Clear Safari History and Website Data

To clear your Safari history and website data, click on the three dots in the top-right corner when viewing your history. You have two options here.

The first is to click on Clear and then select a timeframe for which to delete data (select All History to clear everything). Toggle on Close All Tabs to also close all tabs if you want, and then click on Clear History to confirm.

The second option is to click on Select Websites. This allows you to select and clear only certain websites from your history.

Using the Back Button to Access Recent History

A lot of people don’t know this, but there is a quick and easy shortcut for viewing a list of recently visited websites within a tab.

Most people know that you can click the back button to go back to your previously visited website. However, if you long-press on the back button on Safari, it will bring up a list of your recent websites visited within that tab, so you can instantly choose one instead of continuously pressing the back button until you reach it.

Finding Google Search History on an iPad

If you are a Google user, you can find your synced Google search history on your iPad by following these steps:

  1. Open the Google app.
  2. Tap on your profile picture in the top corner and then on Search History.
  3. Click on the Delete button and select your desired timeframe from the drop-down menu.
  4. To delete a specific history entry, click on the X button next to it, and then confirm you want to delete it from the pop-up.

From the drop-down menu, you can also turn auto-deletion on and off. If you turn it on, you can have Google delete your old activity automatically after a certain time.

If you don’t have the Google app, you can also access and delete your search history from the Google My Activity webpage.

The good thing about Google’s search history is that it doesn’t just show your search activity in Google searches but also across the Google ecosystem. For example, it shows your Google Maps search history and your activity across Shopping, Lens, News, and Translate. You can turn web and app activity off from the Google My Activity page.

Viewing Search History in Chrome on iPad

To see your search history in the Chrome browser on your iPad, follow these steps:

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Click on the More icon, which looks like three dots.
  3. Click on History.
  4. Click on the X button next to an individual history entry to delete it.
  5. Alternatively, to delete your history, click on Delete Browsing Data. Select a time range and check the boxes next to the types of data you want to delete before confirming.

Why You Should Clear Browsing History Regularly

While it’s not a must to clear your browsing history, there are some benefits of doing so. It can help prevent storage buildup in the cache, which could affect your browser’s performance. Your browsing history also leaves a digital footprint that advertisers can use to track your activity.

On the other hand, there are some downsides of clearing your history as well. You may not be able to find things you were looking for or browsing online if you clear your history.

Troubleshooting Missing Browsing History

If your browser history is missing, this is usually because of several reasons:

  • You are signed in with a different account, or you are not signed in at all.
  • You used incognito mode when you browsed the missing websites.
  • You used a different browser.
  • You or someone else accidentally deleted your history.
  • Your settings are set to automatically delete your history after a certain amount of time.

Managing Privacy Settings for Better Control

There are a few settings you should know about when using Safari on iPad.

Go to Settings > Apps > Safari, where you can access and enable important privacy settings such as Prevent Cross-Site Tracking and Hide IP Address to hide your IP from trackers. Two more settings you should enable here are the Fraudulent Website Warning and Advanced Tracking and Fingerprint Protection.

In this case, fingerprint doesn’t refer to your Touch ID but rather to protecting you from a technique called fingerprinting, which is something advertisers and online trackers use to track your activity and identify you even if cookies are blocked.

However, another option you can enable is Require Face ID / Touch ID to Unlock Private Browsing, which will require your Touch ID to unlock your private tabs.

Conclusion

I hope this guide was useful! It’s easy to manage your browsing history on your iPad, whether you use Safari or Google Chrome. You can access your history and delete it, but I also recommend implementing the online privacy practices that I mentioned in this article to protect your online safety.
